From early June 1943, the division prepared for Operation Citadel, and upon its launch, it advanced across the Psel river in the Luchki, Vasilyevka, and Krasny Oktyabr areas.
On the night of 18 July 1943, the fiercely contested bridgeheads were abandoned; the two-week offensive resulted in heavy casualties (over 4,400 killed, wounded, and missing).
